Forever February: A New Holiday
It’s Leap Day. I don’t remember people calling it that four years ago. I don’t remember February 29th four years ago, though. Most likely because I didn’t have Twitter four years ago. February has always been an interesting or fun month for me. My birthday’s in February. Paul’s is too, a day after mine, actually. In college we found that several of our friends had birthdays in the span of two weeks. I think once we had a big combined party, again, I don’t remember. It’s also the shortest month of the year and is the only one that isn’t 30 or 31 days. I’ve always felt a little slighted by the universe for that. For selfish people who celebrate their birthday the whole month, Februarians have been shorted.
So I announce a new holiday: Forever February! From now on, I am extending February to 30 or 31 days (depending on how I feel). There will no longer be March 1st or 2nd. It’ll be February 29th and 30th. This year there is an actual 29th so tomorrow will obviously be the 30th. Feel free to extend it however you want. This is a holiday of the people. Celebrate however you want as well! Have a discussion, paint a self portrait, build a house, let your alter-ego drive your car down the highway on a really rainy day and crash! Since I have to work tomorrow and I was just rejected from grad school, I’ll celebrate by staring angrily into mountains of office supplies and possibly glitter bombing coworkers.
Paul and James invented Friends End Day to commemorate the ending of the TV show Friends which is May 6th. So I’m going to view Forever February as the Mardi Gras to Friends End Day’s Easter. It’ll be a good time to officially get over the feeling every new year where you’re not sure when to stop thinking it’s the new year. It’s the end of February, you’re full blown into the new year. It’ll be a good time to set short term goals. Then another celebration with good friends in May with Friends End Day.
Will this last? Who knows. It’ll last however long you want it to. February is too short and we all know March is incredibly boring so why not make up a holiday to break things up? And don’t we need more things to hashtag in Twitter? #FOREVERFEBRUARY Even if we don’t, I do. Enjoy everyone!
