Friday Tidbit: Hymns

1) The music that Regina Spektor creates goes from my ear canals straight to my soul. Some of her songs, like “Us,” sound like the musical version of cosmic truths, the hymns of wisdom. These are the sounds that blow your mind, that take you to a deeper understanding of the universe. Some of her songs, like “Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)” below, help your soul dance like a six year old. As important as it is to meditate on existence, sometimes you just need to smile and sing.

2) My friend Sara recently participated in an art installation done by Spencer Tunick in Munich. (That’s got to be the title for something neat, I’m sure.) It was designed to mark the opening of the Munich opera season. Spencer Tunick operates in the medium of naked people. For this particular work, people were covered in either red or gold paint and set up in rings, to recreate scenes from Richard Wagner’s opera Der Ring des Nibelungen. Sara was gold. Check out the photos here.

3) A few years ago, iTunes let me download “Go On, Say It” by Blind Pilot. The acoustic track wasn’t that appealing to me. Last week, I heard this song twice and couldn’t move. It’s one of those songs that just grabs me, making me stop where I am to mentally dance through its harmonies. It sounds like a song I’ve heard before. I hope one day to write something as timeless.
